Culture is always changing… • Innovation: taking existing technology and resources and creating something new to meet a need • Cultural diffusion: the spread of innovation or other culture traits from one culture to another • Acculturation: when one culture changes a great deal through its meeting with another culture

Language • Language can help establish a cultural identity. • Nationalism • Divide • 3,000-6,500 languages are spoken worldwide. • Languages are divided into families • Dialects are versions of languages and reflect changes in speech patterns related to class, region, or other cultural changes

  6. Language Diffusion • May follow trade routes or be invented • Diffusion may occur through migration

  7. Religion • Divided into three groups • Monotheistic, Polytheistic, and Animistic • Religion can spread through conversion and diffusion
