Genetic Drift And The Founder Effect
Genetic Drift • Is the change in the relative frequency in which an allele occurs in a population due to random sampling and chance. Genetic drift causes a change in the gene pool. This is common in small, isolated populations where the gene pool is small enough that genetic drift could potentially change its makeup substantially. A result of genetic drift is genetic traits being lost from a population or that the traits getting so wide spread that it makes survival vastly more difficult and makes reproduction of those traits more difficult for the alleles involved.
