  1. Genetic Drift By: Kaitlyn, Pearl, Ellie, Alicia

  2. Genetic Drift • Chance events that cause allele frequencies to fluctuate unpredictably from one generation to the next, especially in small populations

  3. The Founder Effect • When a few individuals become isolated from a larger population the smaller group may establish a new population whose gene pool differs from the original population • Example: On the island of Tristan da Cunha one British colonist have an allele that caused blindness and over time the frequency of that allele increased to be 10x higher than originally

  4. The Bottleneck Effect • Occurs after a severe drop in population, certain alleles become either under, over, or may not be represented in the population • Example: Greater Prairie Chickens populations drastically decreased due to farmland conversion. As the population recovered, the chance of survival was much lower than other populations due to an increase of a harmful allele

  5. Effects of Genetic Drift • Significantly impacts small populations • Causes allele frequencies to change randomly • Genetic variation is decreased • Harmful alleles can become more common
