  6. Fire Protection and Prevention Act (FPPA) Purpose of the FPPA in respect to Fire Safety Inspections: An Act to promote fire prevention and public safety in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Fire Code (OFC) is part of the FPPA.

  7. Ontario Fire Code (OFC) The minimal level of fire and life safety in every building in the Province of Ontario

  8. Role of WFR Fire Prevention Officersand uWaterloo Safety OfficePerform inspections by enforcing the regulations within the OFC

  9. Ontario Fire Code Part 2 Closures in fire separations (fire rated doors) shall not be obstructed, blocked, wedged open.

  10. Decorative Materials Materials in Exits & Corridors: Decorative materials, drapes, curtains in corridors and in exits must be flame resistant. Quantity of materials must be approved by the Safety Office.

  11. Combustible Materials (boxes, equipment, supplies) are not permitted in corridors, exits, stairwells or service rooms Combustible Materials

  12. Temporary Electrical Wiring 13 • Only use approved (ESA, CSA) power bars. • Power bar must be plugged in directly to electrical wall outlet.

  13. Illegal Parking Practices Fire Routes Adjacent to Fire Hydrants Adjacent to Fire Department Connections for Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems.

  17. Exits (Means of Egress) Exit Capacity – 60 persons for one exit door in Assembly Buildings – Ontario Building Code Maximum occupant load – see posting Lecture Rooms – maximum seating does not include the stairs inside the rooms

  18. Exits (Continued) Can not have obstructions in exits (means of egress) i.e. corridors leading to stairwells or to exterior exits.

  19. Exit Door Hardware Hardware on exit doors must latch in the closed position. Can not be disconnected or removed

  20. Exit Signs Shall be clearly visible and maintained Signs shall be illuminated externally or internally depending on their design

  22. Arson Prevention 30% of fires at uWaterloo from 2005 to 2009 were intentional Over 20% of US campus fatal fires from 2000 to present were intentional Major arson fires in the university community: McMaster October 2008; Laurier April 2009 and Campus Court April 2010

  24. Cooking Fire Safety • Never leave cooking unattended • Never wear loose fitting clothing when cooking • Keep combustibles away from the stove

  26. Candles • Are not allowed in residences • Includes birthday candles, sparklers and incense sticks

  27. Working Smoke Alarms“IT’S THE LAW” • Could result in a $235 ticket • Could result in a $50,000 fine for individual • Do not cover up or disconnect
