…. TO CSGN MEMBERS AND GUESTS Tomorrow’s Places Create, Maintain, Sustain
2008 – 2009: A BUSY YEAR FOR CSG NETWORK • Your Annual Conference • 9 Regional meetings • 3 Super Regional meetings • 9 Learning Academies • 1 Study Tour • 2 Advisory Group Meetings • Training • Advice service
You are Already Doing a Lot! You worked with us on….. • Eco-Schools – over half the schools in England are taking part • Fast Food Litter – brands named and shamed • Big Tidy-up – over 12,000 groups involved and more than 23,000 bags of rubbish collected • Media and publicity e.g. Panorama, Litterbugs report • Research on Littering and Fly-tipping • Local Environmental Skills
But External Challenges Abound • End of PSA 8 – Cleaner, Safer, Greener • Change from BVPI 199 to NI 195 • Media criticism – from sausage rolls to collection schedules! • Financial stringencies driving improvement & efficiencies • Comprehensive Area Assessment • Skills shortfalls and lack of strategic connections • Mixed messages from the public and changing social attitudes
In 2008 we Asked, and you Told Us, About ENCAMS…….. • ‘Back to basics’ approach welcomed • Name/branding needs changing • National campaigning and policy leadership • Less jargon; better partnerships. • Focus should be on behavioural change, especially through schools and communities • Provide a tailored service to local authorities & sort out charging
… and About Cleaner Safer Greener Network • Use and understanding of CSGN varies • amongst members; the more you use it, the • more you value it. • Some caution about ‘safe’ not being included. • Need more information/help to understand the • structure of ENCAMS (who does what). • Lost the ‘personal touch’ with loss of regional • structure. • Finances constrained; value for money is all • important; specify the benefits.
