  1. Warm Up Tuesday/Wednesday Read the following laws from the “Laws of the 12 tables”… …write 3-5 sentences about what you think these laws tell you about the Roman culture. Give examples to back up your opinion. (You will hand this in)

  2. A new law for Scott? Finally, on the back of your worksheet, come up with and write down one new law that would be good for all at Scott Middle School. Be prepared to defend your law from these questions… Why would it be good? Would it be good for all? What would be some negatives of your new law? Who would be for it? Against it? As a class, we will vote on these laws to see if they will be added to a 13th Table

Roman Republic • Key Term: Republic • a state in which supreme power is held by the people AND their elected representatives, AND which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. • Key Term: Roman Republic • - the ancient Roman state from 509 BC until Augustus assumed power in 27 BC; was governed by an elected Senate

(please the masses) • What does having 2 consuls in power and for only one year do? Positives, negatives? • Positives and negatives of having a dictator? What COULD happen?

Levels of Government in Rome • Dictator: • Became leader and maybe military general in case of emergency. • Consul: • “president” of the Roman republic • 2 were elected each year, they could veto one another • Senate: • Group of 300 patrician men (comparable to US Senate) • Assembly: • Met in the Forum, this group of plebeians voted on the Consul

  11. The story of Cincinnatus, 519-439 B.C. • Cincinnatus was called out of retirement to lead the Roman army when they were in trouble. • He was victorious after one day. He came back and gave up his power and returned to his farm.
