Making Good Assessments • What are the parts of a multiple choice item? • 1. Stem • How do I create a good stem? • CLEARLY state the problem/question • Don’t use ambiguous wording • Do not include irrelevant information • Emphasize qualifiers such as EXCEPT and BEST in the stem item.

Alternatives • Answer • Distractors • What is the purpose of a distractor? • Distractors should appear to be plausible answers for students who have NOT met the objective. • Conversely, distracters will appear as implausible for those students who HAVE met the objective.
Making Good Assessments • How do I create good alternatives (answers and distractors)? • Write the answer first, then create the distractors • Only provide plausible distractors. • Alternatives should be similar in length. • Provide alternatives in logical order • Ex: Dates, events, steps in a process • Avoid using “all of the above,” “none of the above,” “always,” and “never” • Avoid textbook or verbatim phrasing • Avoid clues in the answer choices that give away the correct response. • Make sure that the correct response is the ONLY correct response.
