Forms of Energy • Thermal • Chemical • Electrical • Sound • Light • Nuclear
Thermal Energy • All of the kinetic energy due to random motion of the particles that make up an object
Changes of State • http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/content/keystage3/chemistry/pc/learningSimulations/COSSC/launch.html
Thermal Energy • Gas – high temperature, particles moving fast, particles far apart • Liquid – medium temperature, particles moving slower, particles closer together • Solid – low temperature, particles vibrate in place, particles close together
Chemical Energy • The energy of a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged
Electrical Energy • The energy of moving electrons
Sound Energy • Caused by an object’s vibrations
Nuclear Energy • The energy that comes from changes in the nucleus of an atom
Light Energy • Produced by the vibrations of electrically charged particles
Reflected • Bouncing of a wave off a surface
Refracted • The bending of a wave as it moves from one material to another
Transmitted • Transparent objects transmit light – or allow light to pass through
Absorbed • Energy of light is taken up by matter in an object. Objects take on the color of the light they reflect. All other colors are absorbed.
