  1. October 2009 Andrea Debbané VP Public Affairs & Communications Airbus The Socio-economic benefits of aviation

  2. Direct impact on a global scale • Directly employs more than 5.5 million people • Turnover $1 trillion • GDP: $425 billion • More than some G20 members • 1.5 times the size of the pharmaceutical industry or the textile industry • 1/3 bigger than the motor production industry. 2

  3. How aviation drives the wider economy • 15 million jobs • $1.1 trillion GDP Aviation, its supply chain & the spending of employees supports Adding just tourism, we support • 33 million jobs • $1.5 trillion GDP – as a country this would rank aviation 8th between Italy & Spain 3

  4. A catalyst for international trade…& development • 50 milliontonnes of freight each year • 35% of world trade by value • Up 65% in 10 years • Fast, efficient access to markets • A 20 day shipping time = 16% tariff on imports • Globally, each day saved is worth over $100 billion • 63% of firms say air transport ‘vital/very important’ to investment decisions • 80% of firms consider air transport as important to efficiency 4

  5. A catalyst for international trade…& development • High-tech • 40% of high-tech sales depend on good quality air transport links • Express delivery • Supports 2.65 million jobs • Fresh produce • In Africa over 1.5 million jobs depend on agricultural exports to UK alone

  6. A key driver of tourism • Over 40% of international tourists travel by air • Airborne tourism supports 18 million jobs & $400 billion GDP 7

  7. A lifeline for Borneo’s people & biodiversity • Preservesrainforest & wildlife • Provides sustainable jobs • Generates direct & indirect foreign revenue • Supports rural development through revenue sharing • Spreads understanding through integration with local community • Attracts foreign investment • Impossible without air travel 8

  8. A truly global network • Overseas remittances can account for 30% of some countries’ GDP • A 10% increase in remittances leads to a 3.5% decrease in poverty • Air transport is often the only means to sustain traditional cultures in remote areas 9

  9. A key driver of innovation • The social return for aerospace R&D spending is 70% compared to 50% for manufacturing as a whole. • Every $100 million invested in aerospace R&D generates an additional $70 million of GDP, year-after-year. 10

  10. A strong future? At around 5% p.a.growth for next 20 years • Direct: 8.5 million jobs & $1 trillion GDP • With supply chain & spending: 23 million jobs & $2.6 trillion GDP • With tourism: 50 million jobs & $3.6 trillion • 3% of global man-made CO2 emissions If growth constrained by 1% per year: • 6 million fewer jobs & $600 billion less GDP 11

  11. A saving of 2% on emissions? Reducing air transport would not automatically lower emissions

  12. What does this mean for Asia-Pacific? • Direct benefits : • >1.2 million jobs & > $60bn GDP • Indirect & induced benefits: • >3 million jobs & $170 bn GDP • +8.5 million tourism jobs & $75bn GDP • By 2026: • >5 million jobs & $540 billion in GDP • +13.5 million tourism jobs & $780bn GDP • Every 1% less growth: • 2 million fewer jobs • $130 billion less GDP 13
