Gendered division of labour WINNERS AND LOSERS
Domestic work “The losers of gendered division are mostly women” • Value of unpaid work in Australia, altogether, is worth between 48-64% of the Gross Domestic Product The state and public sphere both ‘effectively free ride’ off unpaid domestic work in terms of ‘the next generation’. This means that: out-of-school education and socialisation of a child comes without a cost to these other institutions.
Becker – Earnings function “as women generally earn less than men, it makes sense for the unpaid caring role in the household to be largely undertaken by mothers”. The earning function reasons that men (generally) earn more than women, so it makes sense for her to sacrifice her working time to perform unpaid essential tasks. The inequality between men and women’s wages cause this division of responsibility. Though “the issue of why women’s earning functions are lower than men’s is not addressed”.
