WP2 – D15 LEX CO reuse by upgrading to NGN architecture: A business case migration scenario Jesús F. Lobo (jflp@tid.es) Telefónica I+D LEX CO: Local Exchange Central Office NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Objectives • To define a methodology about LEX CO premises evolution to upgrade them to NGN architecture while . • In this methodology we try to identify the steps needed for optimising the physical space of the LEX CO premises by upgrading existing (old) equipment with the newest one proposed in an NGN environment • To define a case study for analyze the benefits not only for a network operator but also for their customers when the telco upgrades their old equipment with the new one recommended for implementing a Next Generation Network. • This case study will be evaluated in WP2 D30 NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Working areas to analyze • Area 1: Civil work • Power equipment and transformers • Area 2: Energy • CC box, AC box, batteries room, equipment room • Area 3: Distribution and transmission mediums • Cables, urban distributor, links distributor and optical distributor • Area 4: Switching and transmission • Area 5:Access area • Customers access, Ibermic and miscellaneous circuits • Area 6: Co-location space for 3rd parties • Features related to central use by other operators and fulfilment of regulation aspects in each country NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Steps to be done • Calculate the NPV (Net Present Value) of the assets (f.i. spaces to be released) • Analyse the feasibility of technical migration: From current network to NGN network • Can the netw. Operator reuse the old equipment? • Must be updated all the equiments? • Analyse the economical feasibilty of the movements • Priorization of movements NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Diferent uses of the buildings • The network operators have a large number of buildings used for • Allocate equipment (Network buildings) • Office buildings • It is necessary to: • Identify how many buildings has the operator • Identify how many of them are able to release space and have a high value (e.g. They are located in the downtown) NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Some elements to be considered in the Cash Flow • SALE OF BUILDINGS • RELEASED RENTS • SAVINGS IN MAINTENANCE • New buildings for reallocating services • Adjustment of spaces (Office, Network equip. ) • Movement of resources • Others NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Results will help for the decisions to be taken • What “Office Buildings”, without equipments can be sold • What “Netw. Buldings” needs to be accommodated for reallocating employees • Which (old) equipments can be re-located (reused) • How many floors/buildings can be sold • New revenues for financing the full upgrading to NGN technologies NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Starting point for the case study:Identification of a potential building for reusing it by upgrading with NGN Select a LEX CO located in the center of the commercial and businesses area of a big city Be sure that the value of the m2 in this zone is high Enough space to be free Attractive space for the new clients NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Example of Netw. Movements Ex570 m2 • RELEASED 8 • RELEASED Tx 380 m2 7 MAIN FRAME 187 m2 • RELEASED 6 • RELEASED 5 PCM equio,275 m2 TxData 314 m2 • RELEASED 4 Energy, Cable´s Gallery Energy, Main Frame, Equipm., Cables B Consolidate Network Equipment in the basement.. NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Example of Netw. MovementsBasement • Re-locate all the energy equipment of the basement in order to obtain enough free space for all. • The multifunctional room will have WILL HAVE AROUND 325M2 TO CONTAIN ALL THE NETWORK EQUIPMENT NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
Example of Netw. Movements8th floor • TWO SWITCHES. • EXCHAGE 1: 14.000 POTS, 3.500 BASIC ACCES, 125 PRIMARY ACCES AND 10.000 trunks • EXCHANGE 2: 18.000 POTS, 1.250 BASIC ACCES, 125 PRIMARY ACCES AND 7.000 trunks • The 2 switches will be replaced in the basement by a new NGN switch NOBEL WP2 Valladolidmeeting (13th-15th October 2004)
