Aim to collect dataset covering land use, geography, environment, communities etc. to make them uniform cartography, formats to document the dataset properly update the dataset continously to make data sets available for research and development free of charge To engourage the use of multidisiplinary data

    5. Pilot project 2003 Soth western Finalnd was selected to be the test site University of Turku set up a web site for the pilot Anyone with remote sensing and GIS data was invited to give test sets Meta data was also collected when available

    6. Pilot project Data can be browsed either with key words of with a map interface Web site was opened september 2003 and was available until end of March 2004. The data can be used until end of June 2004 There is an intention to reopen the web site again as soon as possible

    7. ENVIFACILITATE For continuation a EU application (LIFE /ENV) has been done by a consortia of University of Turku Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) The Regional council of Southwest Finland (RCSF) Estonian environmet information centre (EEIC) University of Latvia (UL)

    8. ENVIFACILITATE Duration 36 months Aim To build the test site by collecting more data Defining rules, how data has to formatted , formulated and stored Developing the access through the web site Demonstrate the usefulness of such a approach by research, development and operational applications

    9. ENVIFACILITATE FMI's role: Help with the system architecture and design of the archive database and retrieval facility Make data available: satellite, radar, SYNOP... Demonstrate the usefulness by meteorological and some other applications (forest fire) Publications, articles...

    10. Future Looks promising, EU application is no in the last round – final decision in August Expected start time beginning of 2005 The motto: ”Towards Opena Data Policy”
