  4. Quiz! • We are going to take a quiz on chapter 8!

  5. By the end of today, we will be able to • Explain the themes surrounding desperation in Ethan Frome. • Explain the author’s choice to build these themes in the novel. • Analyze an article about the time period of Ethan Frome and explain how it changes the way we see the themes in the novel.

  6. Reflection • Write a paragraph explaining what you think will happen to Mattie after she leaves. • Where would she go? • What would she do? • What would happen to her?

  7. History • Read the article to yourself or with a partner. • Then compare that to your prediction for Mattie. • On your reflection draw a line. Title the new section New Impressions. • Write five things that you learned from reading the article. • Write 2 level 2 questions this article raised for you.

  8. What are Mattie’s Options? • Turn to your neighbors and talk about Mattie’s options, now that you have read the article. • We are going to talk about this as a class.

  9. Popcorn Reading: Chapter 9 • Popcorn read • If you are called you may read as much or as little as you like. • Please interrupt us by raising your hand and saying “Stop!” whenever you have a question or notice something you would like to talk about.

  10. Chapter 9 Activity • Write a short essay explaining why Ethan and Mattie decided to commit suicide. Why did they feel like they needed to be so extreme? • Provide a claim, evidence from the text AND the article, and reasoning to support your evidence. • THEN write 2 level 1 questions, 2 level 2 questions, and 2 level 3 questions for this chapter.
