Phase One Abandonment of Racism • 1. Contact – Oblivious to and lack of understanding to racism • 2. Disintegration- Moral dilemmas rooted in cognitive dissonance on issues of race. For example - believing one is nonracist, yet not wanting one’s son or daughter to marry a minority group member. • 3. Reintegration- Idealize own social racial group
Phase twoDefining a Non-Racist Identity • 4. Pseudo Independence- A specific event that opens your awareness to individuals of a different race in a similar situation • 5. Immersion/Emersion- Critical racial thought regarding one’s previous beliefs • 6. Autonomy- Through racial exploration, we become comfortable with racial differences while striving to developing a nonracist white identity
