  2. What is Conversion Disorder? • Conversion disorder is a rare form of disorder in which a person experiences very specific genuine physical symptoms for which no physiological basis can be found.

  3. Continuation • It is considered to be a psychological disorder because no traces of abnormalities in the body are found

  4. Associated Features *Conversion Disorder causes the individual to feel seriously distressed, and cannot participate in social ( work etc.) areas. *Individual cannot control the pain he/she feels.

  5. DSM-IV-TR • Conversion disorders involve unexplained symptoms affecting movement in the body. • These pains aren't able to be explained because there is no actual trace of abnormalities in the body.

  6. Different Types Of Symptoms • 1) Motor Symptoms- these are problems with coordination or balance, weakness in the body, paralyzing , difficulties swallowing and speaking. • 2)Sensory Problems- loss in the sense of touch, physical pain, loss of vision, deafness. • 3) Seizures and conversions.

  7. Etiology • Some individuals are affected if he/she already carries a metal disorder. • The disorder can be genetic • Appears in the ages of 10-35 years. • Appears mostly in woman.

  8. Prevalence • Conversion disorder is uncommon today but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. • In the United States population 23% of woman are affected and .02% of men are affected.

  9. Treatment • Treatment includes evaluating and finding a solution for the stress level in the individuals life. • Behavioral techniques to control symptoms.

  10. Prognosis • In most cases the disorder appears at a young age and grows onto adulthood with greater sumptoms. • Most people seek help from surgeons or medical treatment for their physical pain/symptoms.
