  2. Use an “ellipsis” … • An ellipsis means “words are missing” from the sentence - see the example below: • “Dublin lay enveloped in darkness…” (O’Flaherty 1). • “…twilight faded into the night” (O’Flaherty 1). • “…night…darkness…” (O’Flaherty 1).

  3. Identify the tone the author creates in the short story “The Sniper” and cite text evidence to support your answer. O’Flaherty uses a dark tone in the short story “The Sniper” when the “…twilight faded into the night” (1). “Dublin lay enveloped in darkness…” (O’Flaherty 1) adds tothe overall tone of the story. You can also infer the tone from the connotation of the title that there may be danger or death in the story.

  4. Common Mistakes in MLA Citation • “Dublin lay enveloped in darkness…” (O’Flaherty pg. 1). (do not write “pg”) • “…twilight faded into the night.” (O’Flaherty, 1). (do not use two periods; do not put a comma after the author’s name)
