Habitat • Western hemisphere • Mostly around the tropics • Prefer lowlands
Behavior • Solitary, territorial • Diet: nectar, insects, sap, pollen • Sleep in a torpor state to conserve energy and stay warm
Threats • Predators: large birds, mice, cats, tarantulas, mantises, humans • Habitat destruction and loss • Climate change • 34 (≈10%) species are endangered
Reproduction • Only interact with opposite sex for mating • Female chooses location and makes nest first • Males attract females by posing • A clutch usually has 2 small white eggs • Chicks stay in nest for about a month
