Biography • Born in Geneva in 1712 • Raised by his Aunt and Uncle • Calvinist childhood, converted to Catholocism • Never adopted idea of rigorous discipline • Formal education ended at age 12 • Left Geneva at 16 • Apprenticed to an engraver, secretary to a French ambassador, wrote an opera: “Le Devin du Village”
Biography (cont.) • Wrote “Social Contract,” “Discourse on Sciences and Arts,” “Discourse on Origin of Inequality” “Emile” • Had 5 children with Therese Levasseur • Spent most of adulthood studying and traveling
Philosophical Ideas • Believed that man is good in nature • Society influenced people’s actions • Society is “artificial” and “corrupt” • People have a duty to society • Believes in individual diversity and freedom and the well being of the whole
Beliefs in Government • Politics and morality should not be separated • Equality, Freedom, and Sovereignty • The people should make the laws • Government should protect equality and rights of the citizens • True Sovereignty is always directed at the public good
Influences on the New America Idea that people enter into Social Contract. People should be free and treated equally. The leader should look out for what’s best for their people. Once the rulers stop doing what is best for the people, the people have the right to choose new rulers.
