  1. The Endocrine System By Tessa Case, Meredith Burgess, Shelby Burgess, Jaci Wall and Taylor Davis

  2. The endocrine system is made up of glands that are located throughout the body. It involves the use of chemical messengers to transmit information from one part of the body to another. Describes the function of the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal, and pineal gland. The Endocrine System

  3. Hormones Messenger chemicals that are secreted into the bloodstream. These chemicals help maintain homeostasis. They circulate through the bloodstream until they reach specific hormone receptors. By interacting with the nervous system, hormones regulate physical processes and influence behavior. They affect metabolism, growth rate, digestion, blood pressure and sexual development and reproduction. They also are involved in response to stress.

  4. It is a pea sized gland just underneath the brain. Most important part of the endocrine gland because it produces hormones that control functions of the other endocrine glands. It is divided into two parts: anterior and posterior lobe. • Anterior lobe: produces growth hormones, produces hormones that stimulate milk production in females, produces estrogen and testosterone • Posterior lobe: produces hormone that controls water loss by the kidneys, contracts uterus during childbirth and stimulates milk production in females Pituitary Gland

  5. Hypothalamus Located in the lower central part of the brain. Important in regulation of satiety, metabolism and body temperature. Secretes hormones that stimulate or suppress the release of hormones in the pituitary gland. Many of these hormones are secreted into an artery that are transported directly to the pituitary gland. Also secretes a hormone called somatostatin, which causes the pituitary gland to stop the release of growth hormones.

  6. The thyroid is a small gland located below the skin and muscles at the front of the neck, just at the spot where a bow tie would rest. Resembles a butterfly’s wings Manufactures the hormones that help control metabolism and growth Stores 1/5 to 1/3 of iodine. Helps control the growth and the structures of bones, sexual development, and other body functions. Thyroid

  7. Pancreas Pancreas has two main functions: exocrine (to produce the enzymes needed to digest food), and endocrine (to produce hormones that facilitate the uptake and storage of glucose and amino acids.) It’s located deep in the abdomen, sandwiched between the stomach and spine. The integral part of the digestive system that often goes unnoticed until problems occur.

  8. Adrenal Glands A triangle shaped gland on top of the kidneys. The outer part, the cortex, and produces steroid hormones such as cotisol, aldosterone and testosterone. The inner part of the drenal gland is the medulla and produces epinephrine and norepinephrine or adrenaline and noradrenaline.

  9. The pineal gland is located in the middle of the brain and secretes melatonin, a hormone that regulates the wake/sleep cycle. Pineal Gland
