Tornadoes in small CAPE Environments • Synoptic conditions on March 8th 2009 were very similar to April 4th 2004 • Johns et al. (1993), Rasmussen & Blanchard (1998), and other studies have shown that significant tornadoes can occur in small CAPE (less than 1000J kg-1). In addition, studies of tropical storm environments (McCaul 1990; 1991), and case studies of low-topped supercells in the Great Lakes (Davies 1993, Markowski & Straka 2000) illustrated that tornadoes can occur in low buoyancy, high shear environments.
