This is the day Charlemagne was born a little over a thousand years ago! It’s thought that Charlemagne was born in Herstal, Wallonia, where his father was born.
Just to let You Know… Charlemagne was the grandson of Charles Matel and the son of Pipin III. When Pipin III died, Charlemagne and his brother, Carloman, split the kingdom. Charlemagne was illegitimate, which means that he was born to parents who were not yet married. His parents wed in 744. When Charlemagne was past the growing age, he stood 6 feet, 4 inches tall, (1.93 meters tall.) His full name was Charles Merovingian.
