Madam c.j Walker By Alice Raileanu Madam C.J Walker’s Story: Madam C.J Walker (also known as Sarah Breedlove at the time) was born in Delta, Louisiana on December 23rd. Her parents were stricken with yellow fever and sadly passed away. In 1882 she married a man called Moses (Jeff) McWilliams (she then became known as Sarah McWilliams) but he passed away in 1887 and Madam C.J Walker/Sarah McWilliams moved to St. Louis with her 2 year old daughter Lelia (later known as A’Lelia). Later in her life (1905) Madam C.J Walker/Sarah McWilliams moved to Denver, Colorado and started to build her business empire. Then, in 1906 she married Charles Joseph Walker and that’s when she became known as Madam C.J Walker! In 1908, Madam and Lelia moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where they opened a beauty parlour and Lelia college, a school for training Walker agents. _______ Sadly at the age of 52 (May 25th 1919) Madam C.J Walker passed away! • Mini Facts: • She was fond of elegant dresses. • She loved automobiles. • She held many parties and meeting at Villa Lewaro. • She was also known as Sarah Breedlove and Sarah McWilliams. • She donated money to restore the Washington D.C. • She always used her special comb on her customers (beauty and hair). • She was a very rich woman in the olden days. • She died at the age of 52 (1867-1919) • She helped the poor! To me, Madam C.J Walker is a significant figure because she was very rich and at the time (olden days), it was very hard to get money. Also she helped a lot of people and even though she was rich...she wasn't selfish...she did something worth doing and that left an impact on the world...it left an impact in my heart! • Quotes • “I am not ashamed of my past. I am not ashamed of my humble beginning.” • “Don’t sit down and wait for opportunities to come! Get up and make them!”
