Table 1 Faculty Staff • There are 13 Thai lecturers and 13 Korean lecturers in 9 universities Teaching Korean language courses. • Most of them hold master degrees in Korean Language. • One Ph.D. Korean instructor at SU. • Two Ph.D. candidates from BUU studying in Korea. • One Ph.D. candidates from PSU studying in Korea. • Some are B.A. instructor volunteers from KOICA.

  8. Table 5 PublicationsRelating Korean language and Korean studies Almost all publications are the texts for beginning and intermediate Korean learners. In addition, Korean-Thai and Thai-Korean dictionariesare mostly in mini-size version (approximate 8,000 words).

Table 7 Progress in Korean Language Teaching • Korean language teaching was delivered for the first time in 1986 at Prince of Songkla University (Pattani) as electives. • At present, there are 9 institutes providing Korean language courses. • Three universities offer courses as majors, minors, and electives. • Five universities offer courses as minors and electives. • Nine universities offer as electives only.

Table 8 Curriculum Courses • Major in Korean language, the curriculum provides 58 and 78 credits. • Minor in Korean language, the curriculum provides 18 and 24 credits. • Electives in Korean language, the curriculum provides 6-12 credits. • Most of courses concern Language skills, grammar,and Korean language for special purposes. • There are not many courses concerning literature, Korean Studies and culture.

  21. The number of students majoring in Korean language before year 2000 started with 22 persons. There has been increasing, until now the number of students are 231 persons. Major course Table 11 Number of students From Before 2000 to 2004

  30. Table 14 Materials Frequently Used • There are teaching materials available in book forms for Korean language. • In addition, audio and VDO formats are being used. The most frequent use is Korean language textbooks. • However, the high demand on every kind of materials are in need especially for Korean language.

There are five centers / institutes. • There are three Korean Studies Centers, one Language Center, and one Asian Studies Institute. • The first established is Thammasart Korean Studies Center (1986) and the latest is Korean Studies Center at Burapha University (2001).

  43. Table 21 Publications • Research publications had been published and distributed mostly by ThammasartUniversity (23 issues from 1985-2002). • Research topics are mostly on the following issues: politics, economic, socials, trade, investment, business, industry, and culture.

  46. Recommendations 1. Academic background of instructors isappropriate. 2. Number of instructors is not in suitable proportions, as a result, researches and academic papers are insufficient. 3. Nine Universitiesthat offerKorean Language are located in every vital region all over Thailand.

  48. Recommendations 4. University offing major in Korean are located in three regions: Eastern, Western and Southern. Institute in the Eastern Region gains advantage since it is near Bangkok and there arebetter job opportunities: Korean firms investing at Industrial parks. In addition, more collaborative network will be well defined. 5. Burapha University and Prince of Songkla University(Pattani Campus)are in the better position for the development in the near future because their Thai full–time lecturers will complete their education soon.

  49. Recommendations 6. The number of students studying Korean increases rapidly. All graduates can easily get highly–paid job. 7. Graduates work in Korea–Thailand joint ventures and work as translators or tourist guides. Further more there are opportunities for them to further their education and become lecturers in the University.
