Vocabulary • PLC: Professional Learning Community • Synonyms: Data Teams, Course Alikes • Protocol: a form, worksheet, or standardized process for completing a task • Norms: Rules or agreements about interpersonal behaviors (We will…) • Synonym: Social Contract • SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results-focused, Timely
PLC Groups • “Empowered teams are such a powerful force of integration and productivity that they form the basic building block of any intelligent organization.” (Pinchot & Pinchot, 1993, p. 66) • “We have known for nearly a quarter of a century that self-managed teams are far more productive than any other form of organizing. . . . by joining with others we can accomplish something important that we could not accomplish alone.” (Wheatley, 1999, pp. 152–153)
Four Critical Questions - DuFour • What do we expect students to learn? • How will we know when they have learned it? • What will respond when they don’t? • How will we respond when they already know it?
PLC Step 1- Establishing, Maintaining, & Evaluating Norms and Roles Team Member Roles • Read and Collaboratively appoint each person a role • Complete the Role Form for your team by writing who has what role Reminder: • Every PLC member needs a role.
PLC Step 2: Establish PLC NORMS • Normsare protocols & Commitments develop by each team to guide their meetings & work. • Suggestions: • Meeting Time • Listening • Confidentiality • Decision Making • Participation • Attendance
Norms Practice Activity Collaboratively Discuss your top 3 expectations for teamwork Think in terms of a“We will…”format. ALWAYS stay positive! • Read the handout “PLC NORMS” • Collaboratively complete page 3 listing the norms for your team
