  3. Why Vocabulary? • Read the following……talk to your partner and decide what this is telling you in layman’s terms • Report to the group…. Conventional neuroimaging of the brain with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans usually contributes little to the evaluation because it does not detect microscopic axonal injury. Diffusion tensor imaging is a magnetic resonance imaging technique that assesses white matter microstructural integrity and has been shown to detect white matter injuries in mild traumatic brain injury, but whether the findings are clinically useful remains controversial.

Vocabulary Instruction • An effective teacher will preview text that students are going to read and pre-teach academic and domain-specific words that students must understand in order to comprehend that text. • Content-area vocabulary instruction will serve students best if it focuses on words that students will see often and across several subjects.

  5. Tiers of Words • Tier 1: everyday speech, learned in early grades or at home, learned largely through conversation • Examples: (door, house, book) • Tier 2: characterize written and especially academic text, technical writing, literary texts • Examples: (coincidence, reluctant, analysis) • Tier 3: mostly in informational passages, specific to a domain or field of study, often explicitly defined by the text and repeatedly used • Examples: (isotope, Reconstruction, nuclear)

Vocabulary Lists • Where do I find it? • Unpacked Content and Key Terms, Pacing Guides w/Vocabulary Developed • Explicit Vocabulary Instruction • Can Take as Much as 17 Exposures to a word for a student to learn that word • Only target words that appear frequently, not just once or twice words • Give plenty of opportunities for new vocabulary to become ingrained • Discussion • Writing • Reading • Provide sensory information to relate to verbal meanings—e.g. in the key terms to the right, you might break up the word “media influences” and tackle each word separately • Vocabulary instruction takes a little time but has huge rewards in increased student achievement

Explicit Vocabulary • Introduce the word • Show it on the board/screen • Pronounce or guide in decoding skills • Repeat • Provide a student-friendly explanation of the word—be sure definition contains only known words and is easy to understand • Illustrate with examples—concrete, visual, or verbal • Check students’ understanding • Have students discern between examples and non-examples • Students should generate their own examples –APPLICATION (Bloom’s) • Group responses, partner responses, thumbs up/down (pair-share, elbow partners) • Involve the students in the examples—suggest ways the words could be used (games)
