Intro to the Metric System and Scientific Method LaGuardia Community College Lab #1 Prof. Santos
Units of measurement • Scientists around the world use the metric system or International System of units to accurately measure volume, length, temperature, and mass.
Basic reference units • Mass = gram • Temperature = degree Celsius • Volume = liter • Length= meter • *A prefix before the unit can modify the value of the unit!
Prefixes to know! • Kilo M one thousand 103 • Deci d one tenth 10-1 • Centi c one hundredth 10-2 • Milli m one thousandth 10-3 • Micro µ one millionth 10-6
Converting • Know the following • 1 kilogram = 1000 grams • 1 gram = 1000 milligrams • 1 gram = 100 centigrams • 1 centigram = 10 milligrams • 1 milligram = 1000 micrograms
Using the factor label method • Convert 2 kilograms to grams • Convert 35 grams to kilograms • Convert 2500 micrograms to milligrams
AIM • Do assignment 3 AND lab report question #3, 4,5, and 6 • Keep in mind Density = mass/volume • Volume of wood block is length x width x depth
The Scientific method • Process of Inquiry used by scientists and students to find the answer to questions or scientific problems! • Steps! • 1- observation • 2- state a questions based on observations • 3- state a hypothesis • 4- state a prediction using “If …. Then….” format. • 5- conduct an experiment • 6- analyze results • 7- draw a conclusion • 8- repeat the experiment
example • You are the head of the research division of the Leafy Lettuce Company. Your company is experimenting with growing lettuce using hydroponic technology. Hydroponic technology involves growing plants in containers of growth solution in a greenhouse. No soil is used. The growth solution that the company uses contains water, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The company wants to know if adding iron to this formula will improve lettuce growth.
Briefly describe how to test the effect of the formula with iron added. In your description, be sure to: • • state a hypothesis to be tested in the new experiment • • state how the control group will be treated differently from the experimental group • • identify two factors that must be kept the same in both the experimental and control groups • • state what type of data should be collected to support or refute the hypothesis
