Contribution • Formulated evolutionary theory based on the premise that acquired traits are inherited. • His biological evolution theory was systematic and coherent than previous versions. • Presented a two part process • A change in the environment forced organisms to change their behavior. (Use of organs=increase in size and strength, disuse of organs=weakening and shrinking) • Argued that such changes would be inherited so that the characteristics of a species would change gradually over many generations • Darwin acknowledged Lamarack’s contribution • Darwin’s theory never completely rejected Lamarack’s theory
Biography • Born- Aug 1st 1744 Died- Dec 18th 1829 • Field of study-evolutionary science, invertebrate biology paleontology, zoology. • Published numerous books about invertebrates(a term he coined)Paleontology and biological evolution. • Studied priesthood army officer studied botany and medicine. • French Naturalist • 11 siblings Entered Jesuit Seminary at Amiens around 1756 • Joined the French Army in 1761 • Became a bank clerk after leaving the army • Began to study medicine and botany after he was a bank clerk • In 1793 became the Professor of the natural history of insects and worms at the National Museum of Natural History • Coined the term “invertebrates” • Separated Crustacea, Annelida, and Arachnida from “Insecta” • Removed the tunicates and the barnacles from the Mollusca • Married 4 times
