  2. “Trees that are slow to grow bear the best fruit.” Life: • Born in January of 1622 in Paris • Father was a successful upholsterer • Love of theater at early age. Later befriended TiberioFiorelli (Scaramouche), an Italian actor. • Studied law briefly and was allowed to practice in 1641, but chose theater. • First Major Writing: Le MédecinVolant (1645) -The Flying Doctor

  3. Plays • Part of Neo-Classical Movement • Most famous plays: Tartuffe-1664 The Miser-1668 The Misanthrope-1666 Don Juan-1665 The School for Wives- 1662 Was a satirist, observer and philosopher in his writings. “Ah! What a fine thing it is to know something!”

  4. Reactions: • Unafraid of critiquing and being critiqued. • "Quarrel of L'École des femmes" Presented to king. Molière attacked by critics. Molière answers his foes in “Critique de l'École des femmes,” presented in June 1663. • Tartuffe religious battle. “We die only once, and for such a long time.”

  5. Later Years: • Struggled with illness, marital problems, and depression. • Still, wrote and produced a work that showed mastery and genius. Le Misanthrope (1666), lacked the popular appeal of success. • L'Avare(168), failed miserably • Faced extreme financial problems. • A comedy-ballet, Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (1670), brought back public. • Developed a cough-tried to mask as a comic device. • No faith in medicine. • February 17, 1673, during the fourth performance of his last work, Le Maladeimaginaire, Molière began having seizures. • Died that same night, attended only by two nuns, having been refused the right to see a priest. “Reason is not what decides love.”

  6. Fun Facts: • Assumed the name "Molière" in order to spare his family of embarrassment. • Served two prison terms as a result of the company's debts • 1658, Molière's comedy, Le Docteuramoureux, put on for King Louis XIV . • Dom Juan not published till after his death.
