Finding the Subject • In most sentences, the subject comes before the predicate. Loggers cut special trees. subject predicate
Not all sentences begin with the subject. • Questions • Inverted word order (Where the predicate comes before the subject) • Commands (You)
1. Questions Include helping verbs. Will you go with me? Are some trees too small? Have the students finished reading the book? Did he write the book?
2. Inverted Order In some sentences, the predicate comes before the subject. Across the beach walked Robinson. Toward the boat he ran! Around town the kids play baseball.
3. Commands (You) - (You) is understood to be subject. Plant the seedlings. Close the door. Read and follow directions .
Also….. • Sometimes there is extra information in a sentence that is not included in the simple subject. A violent storm blew in. The strange island customs made the visitors angry.
