Zhenghua Secondary School School of Choice, Opportunities & Repute for Excellence ENHANCING CHARACTER EDUCATION THROUGH THE INFUSION OF MORAL REASONING 3 June 2014
THE BAMBOO TREE “The bamboo tree remains underground during the first 4 years and then shoots up to a height of 24 to 27 metres in the 5th year! Unseen, deep underneath, the roots are taking shape and the tree is growing. Growing a bamboo tree is akin to our effort in building our children’s character and nurturing them to become responsible citizen – it is a process. Indeed a lot of hard work is needed. Nothing is going to change overnight. We have to keep working on it, even if we do not see visible results immediately.” - Mr HengSweeKeat (Minister of Education)

WHAT HAVE WE LEARNT? Through the discussion, we have learnt that there are several possible choices of action, it is important to ask ourselves the reasons behind the choices of action, we should think of possible consequences of the choices of action, and make responsible decisions, based on VALUES.
WHAT ELSE CAN WE LEARN FROM THIS? Handling disappointment Collaboration, not competition Community over self
REFLECTION • Share what you have learnt today and why you think it is important. • Recall a past experience (of your own/ someone you know) in which a similar situation occurred. If you feel that a better outcome can be achieved, what would you/your friend do differently?
REFLECTION: SHARE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT TODAY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT. I have learnt that I must do what is right even if nobody is doing it. I cannot spread rumours that are not true because of jealousy because this could lead to severe consequences. I cannot keep it a secret because the Captain will definitely feel sad if nobody turns up. I also cannot avoid doing the right thing just because I’m scared that my relationship with Vice-Captain will sour. I must have responsibility and integrity. I have learnt that we should always do the right thing and not gang up against someone. We should exercise integrity and inform the teacher if someone is being bullied.
REFLECTION: SHARE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT TODAY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT. I cannot take sides and I must be fair. I am a teammate of both and cannot change myself to suit everybody. I need to talk to everyone and make sure the final decision is fair. I learnt that jealousy is such a scary thing and there are many different choices you can make that have different consequences. It is up to you whether you think following your life with values is more important or not.
REFLECTION: SHARE WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT TODAY AND WHY IT IS IMPORTANT. I think that we should think before doing anything because all of our actions have consequences. To get a win-win situation, we should think deeply about the problem and find possible solutions later on. Lastly, we should carry out the best solution that doesn’t negatively affect ourselves and others. I learnt that one’s decision can affect the whole situation and one’s decision should be thought over carefully and thoroughly.
