Reproductive Block IOR Report 2011 Members: Jane Broecker, Felecia Nowak, Kathleen Bertuna, Jennifer Lykens Administrative Assistant: Angie Mower
Ob / Gyn Block • The four week block covers the female reproductive system • Two weeks of gynecology • Two weeks of pregnancy related material • Also included is breast, anatomy, physiology, pathology, and breastfeeding.
Overview • One final exam, no practical • Weekly quizzes • Four S&I sessions • One noon-time lectures
New for 2011: • Increased use of turning point • Lecture on incontinence • Scrupulous attention to exam material and questions • Emphasized benefits of the text book • Pregnancy Lab (Clinical Skills)
Exam • One final exam • All board style multiple choice • All questions either new, or certified by the lecturer giving the material in lecture, readings, or learning topics • 2-4 questions per hour of lecture • Approximately 160 (up from 130) questions
Exam Scores • High Mean • Appropriate Bell Curve • Two failures, one will reassess, the other is repeating the year • Feedback was reviewed, and few questions were altered / thrown out • Reassessment 50/50 mix
Student feedback: Positive Comments of Block: • Overall: Enjoyable and well organized • Felt clinical relevance was good and helpful for upcoming boards • Felt this block was helpful for upcoming clinical rotations • Clinical skills labs were of high quality and clinically relevant
Student feedback: Constructive Criticism of Block: • Some felt the block was too clinical • New critique that there were too many slides presented “Cut the Fat” • Would like this to be a 5 week block • Would like pharmacology review, although most appreciated the way pharmacology was integrated in the block • Want a hands on Ultrasound lab • Want us to just teach them what will be on boards.
Faculty Evaluations: Positive Comments • Many faculty complimented for teaching style, content of presentations, and ability to stimulate interest in and understanding of ob/gyn • Use of Turningpoint was appreciated • Lykens, who taught the endocrine lectures was complimented again
Faculty: Constructive Criticism / Comments • Some faculty were criticized for not being dynamic • Much criticism of power-point presentations – too many slides • Certain faculty were not appreciated as much as others, and this is an ongoing problem
Written Exam: Positive • Was fair • Most students believed the exam was representative of the LTs, Lectures, and other material required. • They liked knowing that each hour of lecture would be given 2-4 questions
Written Exam: • Minimal criticism of exam • Didn’t like histology questions on it • Felt some questions were ambiguous • Felt it was fair • Liked distribution • Just FYI, there were no complaints that it was too long
Changes for next year: • Work with faculty to ensure that basic science and broad knowledge of ob/gyn is covered well • Discuss streamlining powerpoints for some faculty • Consideration of a pharmacology lecture to summarize the most common medications used in ob/gyn • Organize an Obstetric ultrasound lab • Continue to encourage utilization of Turning Point
Wish List • 5 week block • Remove Breast patholgy / cancer from this block • Eliminate Board Mania • Higher attendance in lecture
