West Herzegovina Canton – in the regional context Background : • located in the southwest of BiH, one of the 10 cantons in FBIH, bordering with Central Dalmatian coast in Croatia (Split-Dalmatia County) • Population: approx. 88 900 • Total area: 1362,20 km2 • Seat of the government located in Široki Brijeg • Four municipalities

Industry and opportunities • Industry: • metallurgy and metal-processing industry (aluminum) • construction engineering • agriculture • forestry • wood processing industry • food industry • Opportunities: • increased export: aluminum products, architectural stone, bauxite, plastic products • energy sector: sun, wind • tourism: rural tourism, cultural heritage sites, waterfalls Kravice and Koćuša, Nature Park Blidinje

  4. Regional partner in the EU funded projects Projects implemented or underway: • Project ‘Stone’ - regional partners from the neighbouring regions in BIH and Croatia with the total value of the project being 219,339.05 EUR • Project ‘Sustainable use of water resources in Imotski-Bekijsko field’, - BIH and CRO partners, value 277,907.58 EUR • Project ‘Roof of Rock’ - within the IPA Adriatic CBC Programme, value 146,398.05 EUR • Project ‘BBio’ – within IPA CBC CRO-BIH, value 385,287.43 EUR

Towards sustainable development • Strengthening its position and role in the regional context is seen as a commitment • Future actions are laid down in the two strategic documents that have been drafted and are pending their adoption by the legislative body: • Development Strategy for West Herzegovina Canton for the period 2014 – 2020 • Spatial Plan Elaboration of the West Herzegovina Canton for the period 2012 - 2032
