Muscles of the Musculoskeletal System Heather Deveaux
Muscle Origin & Insertion • Muscle Origin • Where the muscle begins • Muscle Insertion • Where the muscle ends of extends into another muscle
Major Muscles of the Body • Sternocleidomastoid • Large neck muscle which starts at the base of the skull and wraps around the neck and ends at the clavicle • One on either side of the neck • Major function is to turn the head left and right
Pectoralis Major • Larges muscle in the upper chest • Connects to sternum and reaches toward to under arm • Major function is to control shoulder and arm
Trapezius • Large muscle connecting from the neck to the shoulder and extends down the back • Sometimes protrudes and has a lot of definition • Major function is to lift the shoulder in an upward motion
Deltoid • Large muscle blanketing the shoulder • Connects from clavicle to shoulder base • Major function is to allow the shoulder and arm to lower
Bicep • Large muscle on the front of the upper arm • Major function is to flex the forearm and rotate the arm from side to side • Begins under the armpit and extends to the elbow bend
Tricep • Major muscle on the back of the arm • Extends the forearm and allows for rotation of the entire arm from front to back • connects at the deltoid base and extends to the elbow bend
Gluteus maximus • Large buttock muscle • Begins at base of spine and extends to mid thigh • Major function is support, extension, rotation of leg
Hamstring • Back of leg, several smaller muscles make up the hamstrings • Helps to flex the knee and extend the hip • Enables forward motion of the knee (kicking) • Extends from glute muscles to knee
Gastronemius • Calf muscle • Bends knee and allows leg to balance on heel • Starts at knee bend and extends to Achilles tendon and wraps around the entire lower portion of the leg
Quadriceps • Front of upper leg • Four large muscles make up the quads • “thigh muscle” • This extends the knee • Begins at base of pelvis and extends to knee
Types of Muscle Movement • Flexion • Bending a limb • Extension • Straightening a limb • Abduction • Moving away from the body • Adduction • Moving toward the body
Types of Muscle Movements • Rotation • Circular movement from the central point of the limb • Dorsiflexion • Pertains to ankle only • Bending toward the body • Plantar flexion • Pertains to ankle only • Bending away from body
Types of Muscle Movements • Supination • Turning the palm of the hand forward • Pronation • Turning the palm of the hand downward • ROM • Range of Motion • Used to describe the ability or inability of a joint to move and rotate
