  2. The American Value System What are the basic values that form the foundation of American culture?

The American Value System • Personal Achievement—nation built primarily by people who valued individual achievement, as in the area of employment; athletic competition; measured in terms of power and wealth • Individualism— key to personal achievement; success comes through hard work and initiative; negative- if person does not succeed than that person is to blame • Work—discipline, dedication, and hard work are viewed as signs of virtue; view those who do not work as lazy and immoral

The American Value System • Morality and Humanitarianism— United States founded on strong religious faith, belief in justice, and equality; high value is placed on morality and the world is viewed in terms of right and wrong; quick to help the less fortunate • Efficiency and Practicality—practical and inventive; every problem has a solution; objects are judged on their usefulness and people on their ability to get things done

The American Value System • Progress and Material Comfort— always looked toward the future with optimism; through hard work and determination, living standards will continue to improve; science and technology will make the world a better and more comfortable place; high value on material comfort • Equality and Democracy—to have human equality, there must be an equality of opportunity; success must be earned; do not necessarily believe that everyone will be equally successful; values of hard work and personal achievement lead most Americans to view success as a reward that must be earned • Freedom—freedoms of choice such as religion, speech, and press must be protected from government interference

THE AMERICAN VALUE SYSTEM • Nationalism and Patriotism, science and rationality, and racial and group superiority also are core values • Education: achieve the highest education possible; unfavorably view those who deliberately choose not to fulfill their educational potential • Religious values • Romantic love: marry primarily because they fall in love in love with one another

The American Value System Our Changing Values • Self-fulfillment: Commitment to the full development of one’s personality, talents, and potential; • Be All you can be!!! • Leisure: vacations, recreational sports etc • Physical fitness: gym memberships • Youthfulness: diets, plastic surgery • Seminars, television programs, and books offer self-help ideas • Leads to narcissism: extreme self centeredness • Weakened the values of hard work and moderation
