Standards-Based Grading 101 What is standards-based grading and how will it work in Ms. Hurd’s class?
What is standards-based grading? • In the past, your grades have probably been made up of the following types or categories of grades: • Classwork, Homework, Quizzes, Tests • Things this year are very different. Everything that goes into the grade book will show to what extent you’ve mastered a standard. • That means no more bonus points, no more “fluff” work. Everything that goes into the grade book will be based on a standard.
Measurement Topics • Each assignment you complete in here will fall under one or more Measurement Topics. When I put it into the grade book, rather than being under a category like “Quiz” or “Test,” it will be categorized under one or more of the 10th Grade Literature/Composition Measurement Topics.
10th Grade Literature/Composition Measurement Topics • Literary analysis • Informational analysis • Written ideas/content • Written organization • Research • Conventions • Vocabulary • Critical listening/presentation skills
So how can I do well with this new grading system? • Do your absolute best on everything you do in this class. • If you don’t understand a concept or how to do something, let us know so that we can teach it again or explain it in a different way. • Basically, you can’t get good grades anymore because you’re a nice person or because I’m a nice person. You have to actually SHOW YOU UNDERSTAND what we’re teaching you through the work you turn in. It’s actually pretty cool if you think about it.
