Objectives • By the end of the session you will be able to: • Design a lesson and set of supportive materials to keep students engaged • Develop a positive learning environment by creating clear expectations and rules for students • Defuse a negative situation or remove the student from the classroom with minimal distractions to the learning process

  3. Designing a Lesson • Clearly state the objectives of the lesson • Lesson should address all learning styles • Look at the lesson as an opportunity to get students thinking outside the box • Have students actively participate in the lesson through projects, hands-on, or games • Actively deliver the lesson

  4. Positive Learning Environment • Clearly state the rules and expectations of the class • Clearly state consequences for not following the rules • Consistently follow through with consequences • Create a supportive classroom environment

  6. Defuse a Negative Situation • Use silent queue to refocus attention • Stand near the student causing situation while teaching • Whisper to student who is causing situation • Situation continues – Quietly as student to step out of classroom to further discuss problem

  7. Role Play • 2 situations: • Negative situation • Disruption where removal from class is warranted • Debrief

  8. Assessments • Write a lesson plan for the material given • Write a response to the scenario given • Complete the survey for the training session
