Lexis • Vocabulary • Less formal than in written texts • Use of slang, contractions (can’t, we’ve, it’s) and colloquialisms eg tenner rather than ten pound note • Phatic Expressions • Social grooming eg ‘How are you?’ • Deictic Expressions • These are expressions that cannot be understood if the context of the utterance is known eg use of pronouns, expressions of time such as now, then and references to place such as here, there.

  3. Grammar • Interrupted constructions • Shall we-would you like to have lunch now? • Disjointed constructions • He knows about cars-what’s a good price for second hand. • Incomplete constructions or ellipsis • You out tonight then?

  4. Non Fluency FeaturesAn essential part of speech • Fillers • eg ‘sort of’, ‘I mean’, ‘you know’, ‘kind of’ • Filled pauses • eg ‘um’ or ‘er • Repetitions • Either single words or several in a sequence • False starts • See interrupted constructions
