Data Base Techniques for Pictorial Applications 1979, pp. 369-411 [p. 372]: “Scientists of different disciplines have developed their own models and languages starting from traditional data. We must underline that the computer tools must match these scientific languages … taking into account that a computer tool has always an ‘influence on user thinking habits”. [p. 376] “The data related with the surface water system are utilized by several users… Experts of different disciplines use their languages to describe phenomena and data…The communication with the user must be different according to the various disciplines... What the ‘information analist’ is required to do is to identify what can be coded in the user language; that is the user is asked to design with the ‘information analist’ an ‘intermediate language’ which is the base of the query language for the ‘specialized data base”.

Protti Simulation of hepatological models: a study in visual interactive exploration of scientific problems. 1991 [p. 75] “When these visual expressions are systematically used within a scientific community –from now on called ‘the community of experts or of users’ – bi-dimensional notations are often developed which allow the construction of complex messages from some sets of primitive icons. These visual notations are the result of agreement within the community of users and capture and reflect generally accepted models of the reality under study. Hence they are used by the members of the community to organize, describe and develop activities which are, in their turn, improved on the basis of the experience gained by this use. This paper discusses how these notations can be exploited in the development of interactive software tools designed to improve the user’s ability to explore scientific problems”. …
