Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen A Chronology of the Revolution (Summer 1789) • May 5 – Estates General Convenes • June 17 – Third Estate declares itself the National Assembly • June 20 – Tennis Court Oath • July 9 – National Assembly begins drafting new constitution • July 11 – King dismisses financial minister, Jacques Necker, viewed favorably by the Third Estate • July 14 – Storming of the Bastille • July-August – riots over food shortages • August 4 – National Assembly abolishes feudal privileges of 1st and 2nd estates • August 26 – National assembly publishes Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen

Declaration of Rights of Man and the Citizen Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834) • Military officer, became famous in American Revolution as leader of French detachment • During the French Revolution, named leader of the French National Guard, a military force loyal to the National Assembly • Works to keep order until creation of a new constitution • July 11, 1789, presents a draft of DRMC to National Assembly – Adopted August 26
