The First Camp Established DACHAU • Opened on March 22, 1933 • Located about 10 miles northwest of Munich, in southern Germany • Accommodated up to 5,000 prisoners at a time • Served as a “prototype” for other camps that would follow

Liberation of Other Camps • Most concentration camps were liberated between 1944 and 1945. • The camps were liberated by the Allied Troops which were led by the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. • Dachau, the first camp established, was liberated by U.S. soldiers on April 29, 1945.
