What was the location? Chernobyl is located in in Ukraine. This is right next to Russia. About 980 km as a matter of fact.
What was made there? The nuclear plant was used to power soviet Russia with clean, powerful energy. They provided energy to over 5 surrounding cities.
How DOES a power plant work? Nuclear power is basically high-powered steam used to power generators. -This requires a LOT of steam and pressure, so one needs to be VERY cautious……………………..^
So...what exactly happened? April 26th, 1986. Reactor 4 had a major power increase which then led to explode in its core, causing a major meltdown. Lots of radioactive and core materials escaped into the atmosphere.
What happened…continued The nuclear reactor had no containment dome, so everything was leaked directly to the air for 10 days.
But how did it become a ghost town? The entire town of Pripyat which was only 3km from the plant, was completely evacuated in 36 hours. 0 hours: population 49,360 36 hours: population 0 That’s 1,371 people per hour.
What were the consequences? The radiation was worse than 400 atomic bombs. This nuclear meltdown caused Chernobyl to be a...ghost town!
Who put out the fire? Over 600,000-800,000 firefighters and emergency workers helped put out this monstrous disaster. They were also affected by radiation.
Can people go back to Chernobyl? It has been advised not to go back because of Radiation; however, it is not illegal to live in Chernobyl.
What is the Sarcophagus Project? The Sarcophagus roject was an idea to build a giant dome where the original building had collapsed so no other disaster would happen.
What are other interesting facts connected to Chernobyl? it took over 2 years to put out the fire, get rid of radiation equipment, and homes Over 7 million people were affected by this disaster Over 63,000 square miles were affected by radiation.
