  2. Types of Wire • For this project we will be using two types of wire: 3 wire and standard lamp wire. • 3 wire • The wire is rated in gauges, • Has an outside insulation, • May or may not have Internal Insulation, such as the fiberglass shown in the diagram. 3 wire

  3. Types of Wire • Lamp wire • Usually a 16 - 18 gauge wire, • Has a ribbed edge on one side, • This edge identifies the neutral wire, • Neutral wire attaches to the silver connector. Lamp wire

  4. Types of Wire • Each circuit has two to three conductors: • Black wire is “hot”, • White wire is “neutral”, • Green wire is “ground”

Wiring Basics • Let's look at what the holes in an outlet do. • When you look at a normal 120-volt outlet in the United States, there are two vertical slots and then a round hole centered below them. • The left slot is slightly larger than the right. • The left slot is called "neutral,“ (white) • the right slot is called "hot" (black) and • the hole below them is called "ground (green)." • The prongs on a plug fit into these slots in the outlet.

Wiring Basics (Activity 1) • Let’s test our wires and plugs. • Do not AT ANY TIME, Plug in your cable to the electrical connections in the classroom, • In this activity: • The Instructor will instruct you how to correctly use a digital multimeter (DMM) to check for continuity, • Then the instructor will provide you with a grounded 3 wire cable and a multimeter. • Using the multimeter check your cable to determine: • Which color wire connects to each of the prongs on the plug. • Fill in the blank on the handout for each prong and wire.

  8. Wiring Basics • Let’s identify the parts of our switch: • Grounding Screw, • Screw Terminals, • Lever.

  9. Wiring Basics • Wiring the single pole switch. • In wiring our circuit we will place the switch into the black wire of the circuit. • Our white (or neutral) wire will not be broken, • Our green (or ground) will be attached to the conduit box.

Wiring Basics (Activity 2) • Once the ground wire is connected to the conduit box complete the following test: • Do not AT ANY TIME, Plug in your cable to the electrical connections in the classroom, • With the digital multimeter (DMM) check for: • Continuity on each piece of the Desklamp skeleton, • If your Desklamp skeleton does not show continuity on each piece, ask the instructor to check your wiring for errors.

Wiring the lamp • Next, we will need to wire the lamp socket to the switch, • To do this you will need to modify the lamp socket to make it the correct size to slide in the conduit. • Follow the directions provided to you during the instructors demonstration to modify the lamp socket. • Once the lamp socket is modified, • Pull the lamp cord through the Desklamp skeleton,

Wiring the lamp socket • Following the directions previously covered in the “basic wiring” portion of this lesson: • Attach the lamp wire to the “lamp socket”, • Make sure that the “ridged” wire on the lamp cord is connected to the silver terminal of the lamp socket, • Make sure that the “smooth” wire on the lamp cord is connected to the brass terminal of the lamp socket, • Attach the lamp wire to the “switch”, • Make sure that the “smooth” wire on the lamp cord is attached to the other terminal on the switch (opposite the black wire from the 3 wire cable). • Attach the neutral wires, • Make sure that the other end of the lamp cord “ridged” wire (from the lamp socket) is attached to the white wire from the grounded 3 wire cable. Use a wire nut to secure these two wires.

Checking your wiring • Once all the wiring connections have been made, conduct the following tests with a digital multimeter (DMM): • Conduct a continuity check with the digital multimeter: • Place one probe from the DMM to the wide terminal on the end of the 3 wire cable. Place the other probe on the lamp socket terminal that has the “ridged” lamp cord wire connected to it. (The DMM should buzz) • Place the probe from the DMM to the narrow terminal on the end of the 3 wire cable. Place the other probe on the lamp socket terminal that has the “smooth” lamp cord wire connected to it. (The DMM should buzz) • Place the probe from the DMM to the round terminal (ground) on the end of the 3 wire cable. Place the other probe on each piece of conduit that makes up the “skeleton” of the Desklamp. (The DMM should buzz when each piece of the Desklamp is touched by the probe. )

  14. Final Testing of the Desklamp • Once you have run all the continuity tests with the DMM, take your Desklamp to the instructor for one final check. • The instructor will then plug in your Desklamp into the wall outlet. • Do Not plug your Desklamp into the wall socket without first receiving permission from the instructor.
