Purpose of the Story • To enable us to put together a deeper meaning about Industry whether good or bad • Money is the root of all evil
The title metaphorically describes Anne’s astounding performance on the worldwide movie screen of her life for all to see but with a price to pay
Literary Examples in relation • The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir • “She cannot think of herself without man. And she is simply what man decrees; thus she is called “the sex” by which is meant that she appears essentially to the male as a sexual being for him she is sex.
Literary Techniques • “Like a flame trying to snuggle up to an icicle” (in relation to John and Anne)
Themes • Exploitation • What kind of horrific scene do John Lewisohn and Herb Javits witness through the one-way glass panel • Why has Herb resorted to the extreme measures he has in auditioning girls? • What objection does John raise with Herb about hiring the last girl that had auditioned? • In your opinion, are there people in the entertainment industry, or other industries, who are more concerned with profits than with the well-being of even very young people, such as adolescents, or even children?
Desensitization • Have people today lost their ability to feel on a deeper level? • What causes people to become desensitized? • Why does Herb continually try to place Anne into more exciting and stimulating situations?
Objectifying • When John told Anne that no one could remove the new implant from her brain without killing her, he was lying; why would John tell her this lie? • What other types of things do we see that are objectified?

Producer and consumer • How is this related to the story?
Gods Helmet • There is a piece of technology that could be a prototype for the kinds of helmets described in the story. It is called ‘The God Helmet.’ It uses magnets to affect brainwave patterns, and is called ‘The God Helmet’ because the inventor and a neuroscientist who has used it both claim to have been able to induce in subjects wearing the helmet a sense of being in the presence of God. Their experiments have not been reliably replicated, however. But, the researchers hope to use the helmet in the treatment of severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and other brain-based mental illnesses. They claim to be able to use magnets to directly stimulate certain neural responses or to turn off certain other responsesIfthese kinds of technology actually can be made to work reliably and consistently and safely, it could very well lead to technology that would be able to induce certain emotional states in the brain directly: love, sexual arousal, happiness, sadness, anger, jealousy, fear, and so on. If combined with the next generation of the kind of technology that allows brain-operated remote control of computers and robotic limbs, the technology that would allow someone to directly experience the emotional states of someone else whose brainwaves were being recorded would then not be that far off. • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_helmet
