Sparse writing, hard to connect with charactersBy Hannah @ Paperback TreasuresI read Lauren Strasnick's Nothing Like You a while ago and had conflicting feelings about it: I really liked the idea, but I couldn't connect to the writing style. Still, I gave Then You Were Gone a try because the story sounded so good. However, my feelings about Then You Were Gone were pretty much the same as what I

  2. thought about Nothing Like You: I loved the plot and the idea, but the writing style didn't work for me and kept me from really connecting with the characters.I loved the mystery in Then You Were Gone; I loved trying to figure out what could have happened to Dakota and how it relates to Adrienne. And even though I'm usually disappointed by the endings to mysteries like these - too often, they're too unrealistically-happy for me - I loved the resolution to this one: it's the perfect balance of realistic and hopeful, and it works really well for the story.Like I said, though, the writing kept me from enjoying anything deeper than the mystery plot. Lauren Strasnick's writing is very sparse and relies heavily on dialogue. It feels wrong to criticize that because there are many novels in which I have enjoyed a more sparse writing style because it leaves more of the interpretation up to the reader, but with a story that relies so much on emotions, I wanted the writing to be a lot more fleshed-out. I understand why the author would choose to write so sparsely about Adrienne's emotions - to show her disconnect with herself and whatnot - but it still kept me from really connecting with the story. The characters had a lot of potential. I really enjoyed the dynamics of Adrienne's and Dakota's past friendship and now non-relationship; both of them are fascinating characters. But 'fascinating' is pretty much where my appreciation of the characters stops; because the sparse writing style made me feel so distant from the story, I never gained enough insight into the characters or their motivations to really get to know them.Really, that's all there is to it: Lauren Strasnick's writing just isn't my cup of tea. I really liked the idea and the plot, but the writing kept me from ever really connecting with the characters and the emotional side of the story. If you like sparse writing, you should give this one a try, but I think I might be giving up on Lauren Strasnick's writing.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. In the Tradition of 13 Reasons Why and The Fault In Our StarsBy Paula L. PhillipsLooking for a novel that holds an edge to it ? Are you fascinated by edgy teen novels with friends that disappear and the stories behind why, makes you wonder what type of town they lived in or what was really going on ?Then You Were Gone is a teen psychological novel which takes us into the world of two girls Dakota Webb and Adrienne. Growing up these girls were the best of friends and nothing could tear them apart, though as the years passed as they got older. They were into different things and eventually went their separate ways. Dakota Webb became famous and head of the rumour mill with her band and Adrienne blended into the crowd with a group of new friends. Two years pass and Adrienne out of the blue receives a phone call from Dakota needing help. Adrienne not picking up has the message go to voicemail. Later she listens to the message and calls her back four days later. By then it's too late - Dakota is missing and their are rumours circulating that she has committed suicide . Has Dakota killed herself or is she in trouble ? Can Adrienne find out what happened to Dakota and doing so will it make her re-evaluate her life and what she believes in truly ?Then You Were Gone is a quick novel , that once you get sucked into it - it does finish quickly which annoyed me in a way as I would have preferred the ending to go down differently and maybe have a more rounded ending or followed through into a little bit more depth about Dakota and her disappearance. However if you are a fan of Jay Asher's Thirteen Reasons Why and John Green's The Fault in our Stars , then you will enjoy this book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. the mystery falls short and really the only thing this book does is give you a feel for what pretentious LA kids act like.By Wendy D.so cheesy. what the heck. the mystery falls short and really the only thing this book does is give you a feel for what pretentious LA kids act like. In the tradition of 13 Reasons Why, a suspenseful and heart-wrenching novel from the author of Nothing Like You and Her and Me and You.Two years ago, Adriennes best friend walked out of her life. One week ago, she left Adrienne a desperate, muffled voicemail. Adrienne never called back. Now Dakota is missing. She left behind a string of broken hearts, a flurry of rumors, and a suicide note. Adrienne cant stop obsessing over what might have happened if shed answered Dakotas call. And shes increasingly convinced that Dakota must still be alive. Maybe finding and saving Dakota is the only way Adrienne can save herself. Or maybe its too late for them both. From School Library JournalGr 10 Up-Inseparable friends since childhood, Dakota and Adrienne barely acknowledge each other in high school. Then one day, after two years of not speaking, Adrienne gets a desperate phone call from Dakota. She doesn't answer, and then Dakota disappears. Their Los Angeles neighborhood is rocked by her suspected suicide. Although Adrienne has a loving family, doting boyfriend, and caring BFF, she becomes darkly obsessed with Dakota. She starts to act and look like her, including hooking up with her boyfriend. She smokes, skips assignments, and pushes away her loved ones. The story reads quickly, and the ending is more or less positive. However, many readers may feel confused with Adrienne's inexplicable response to Dakota's disappearance, which is somewhat bizarre. Additionally, the author includes plenty of sex, drugs, smoking, alcohol abuse, and coarse language that does not add anything significant to the story line.-Mindy Whipple, West Jordan Library, UT(c) Copyright 2011. Pulls you along with just enough mystery to make your breath catch." -Terra Elan McVoy, author of "Being Friends with Boys""Beautifully written and achingly real, "Then You Were Gone" is taut, suspenseful, and moving." -Ann Redisch Stampler, author of "Where It Began""A gripping story, artfully told. Strasnick writes with precision and beauty." -Jessica Martinez, author of "The Space Between Us"About the AuthorLauren Strasnick grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, now lives in Los Angeles, California, and is a graduate
