DENSITY: What is it? • Density is the measure of how much matter is in a given amount of space • Amount of matter is measured as: mass • Amount of space taken up is measured as: volume • Simply put: Density= Mass Volume • Or we can arrange it in the following triangle: M D X V
Units • MASS: • grams, kilograms, milligrams, etc… • VOLUME • cubic centimeters (for solids), • milliliters, liters,(for liquids) etc… • DENSITY • has a combined unit (mass unit/volume unit) • FOR EXAMPLE: If I measure an apple’s mass in grams and it’s volume in mL, the density unit would be g/mL M D X V
How do we use this triangle • Place your hand over the variable you are solving for and voila, the equation you need is there. M D X V
Let’s solve a problem • If you have a mass of 35.5g and a volume of 87ml, what is the density?
Let’s solve some more problems • If you have a volume of 788 ml and a density of 56 g/ml, what is your mass? • If you have a box with a volume of 9cm3 and a density of .4 g/cm3, what is your mass? • If you have a box with a mass of 5 g and a height, length, and width of 9 cm, 5 cm, and 2 cm, what is the density? • If you have a mass of 1,000g and a density of 89.3 g/ml, what is the volume?
So how would we find the density? • Problem # 11 on page 49 in textbook • Explain how you would find the density of an unknown liquid if you have all the laboratory equipment that you needed • PROCEDURE: M D X V
