Bold Statement “The ongoing and overwhelming need for In-service teacher enhancement programs in physics at the most basic level points to the to the failure of programs at the university level to adequately prepare students for classroom teaching.” (Shaping theFuture, NSF, 1996)
Call To Action In 1999, the American Physical Society, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the American Institute of Physics endorsed a policy statement calling for physics departments and their faculty to become more involved in K-12 teacher preparation.

PhysTEC is a program to improve the science preparation of future K-12 teachers It requires physics and education faculty to work together to provide a preparation for future teachers that emphasizes an interactive engagement and student-centered approach to learning science PhysTEC Program
A Teacher-in-Residence (TIR) program that provides for a local K-12 master teacher to become a full-time participant in assisting faculty in course revisions and team-teaching, and to act as a “reality check” for both preservice teachers and university faculty. Program Components
The redesign of content and pedagogy for targeted physics and science methods courses based on results from physics education research with an emphasis on inquiry-based, hands-on approaches to teaching and learning Program Components
The establishment of an Induction andMentoring program conducted by TIRs and other master teachers to improve the retention of novice science teachers, during their initial years of teaching. Program Components
The participation of physics faculty in the improvement and expansion of school experiences for their students. Program Components
Long Term VISION A self-sustaining Coalition of institutions with the common goal of producing more and better-prepared science teachers committed to student-centered,inquiry-based, hands-on approaches to learning
That will result in Students who are thoroughly competent in meeting the standards for content and process skills as described in the National Science Education Standards (NRC) and the Benchmarks of Project 2061 (AAAS). VISION (cont.)

To work with physics departments, as they collaborate with departments or schools of education and local schools, to improve the preparation of physics, physical science, and elementary teachers. To create mentor and induction programs for PhysTEC graduates. GOALS

PhysTEC targets: undergraduate science majors who might consider careers as secondary science teachers. all preservice elementary teachers because they will have responsibility for science teaching The Audience
PhysTEC-targeted courses will be taken by a large fraction ofstudents enrolled in introductory physics courses. Physics departments that model student-centered approaches in their introductory courses will improve the teaching and learning for all students including those who become teachers. The Audience
