NORTH EAST regional training center Construction Begins On May 11, 2010 the long-awaited construction of the new North East Regional Training Center began at the Edgewood Area of the APG, US Army, Aberdeen Proving Ground. This $ 8.3 million project is intended to replace the aging center located at the Aberdeen Area of APG. The relocation was necessary due to a new military vehicle test track construction that surrounds the existing location, making access a significant challenge. Since the approval of the funding of this project by the Legislature, the MFRI and UMCP Department of Capital Projects have been working with US Army representatives at APG to begin the relocation and construction of the new NERTC. Last year the architectural firm of Edmeades & Stromdahl of Bel Air, Maryland was selected and their work began in May of 2009. This firm has been the design consultants for the last two MFRI regional centers and several other centers in Maryland and surrounding states. They are very well versed in the unique components of fire/rescue training centers, especially the method and materials of structure construction in this harsh environment. Following the selection of the design team, the construction management firm of J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Abingdon, Maryland was contracted to provide construction management for the project.
NORTH EAST regional training center This project uses many of the features of the Southern Maryland Regional Training Center at LaPlata, which is the most recent regional center constructed, completed in 2003. In addition, the new North East Regional Training Center will include a number of updated props and features, including improved flammable liquids simulation, an automotive fire prop, improved exterior student staging/instructional area, and an additional high-temperature room in the burn building. As the project begins to come out of the ground a picture of the future training center is already taking shape. Construction of the center is expected to be completed by May 2011, with move in closely following and initial classes to begin with the Fall 2011 semester.

STUDENT zone MFRI created the Student Zone on the Institute web site as a location for students to find materials and information to improve the training experience for them. The Student Zone provides access to MFRI Note Taking Guides, MFRI Rules and Regulations, a variety of forms related to transcripts, disability accommodations, and certifications, as well as links to documents that will assist students in a variety of classes. The links include materials from the MIEMSS web site, the Maryland Fire Service Personnel Qualifications Board web site, videos for various classes, and adjunct course materials for several classes. With the increasing access to the Internet and electronic media, the Student Zone has allowed MFRI students to access from anywhere important information that helps them succeed in the various programs offered by the Institute. The site has been valuable for students so far and will continue to expand as the need arises.
