  2. Folders • On your folder, you will write/draw the following: -First and Last Name -Class Period -Name of novel-When Zachary Beaver Comes to Town -Author’s Name -Picture relating to the novel -Please add color and detail to the folder. Make it your own.

  3. Activity Sheets • Take the two sheets of loose leaf paper , and please write in the big letters at the top of each sheet the following: • ACTIVITIES (on one sheet) • VOCABULARY (on the other sheet)

  4. Starting Activity (8 points) Before beginning the novel, write a paragraph describing how you think earthworms, circus, and Vietnam are going to be incorporated into this novel. This paragraph needs to have the following: -topic sentence -three lead-offs with transitions -three follow-ups -clincher

  5. Vocabulary Set #1 • Defies-resist openly • Gawk-stare stupidly • Horizon-line where the land and sky seem to meet • Straddle-sit, stand, or walk with legs apart • Oblivious-not aware

  6. Chapter 2 (10 points) Write a one paragraph journal entry acting as Zachary Beaver explaining how he feels about people coming to visit him. Please use first person point of view. (Minimum of five sentences)

  7. Chapter 4 (20 points) After reading Chapters 1-4, you will now complete an activity that asks you information about all four chapters. Put all of your answers in your activities section.

  9. Chapter 6 (10 points) Please write a letter from Cal or Toby to Wayne. Your letter should be 5-7 sentences in length. Include at least two compound sentences.

  10. Chapter Eight (20 points) For this chapter you will complete exercises and questions on the Activity sheet provided. This sheet covers information on Chapters 6-8. You need to complete the assigned sections and keep your sheet and answers in your folder.

  12. Chapter 10 (20 points)Trading Card For this activity, you will use the template provided and create trading card of a major character in the novel.   13. Chapter 12 (10 points) • For this activity, you will complete the Questions for Discussion and Simile and Metaphor activities on the Ch. 9-12 Worksheet. Each answer should be a COMPLETE SENTENCE.

Chapter 14 (30 points) • Draw a MAP of Antler. • INCLUDE the following: Toby’s house, Cal’s house, Gossimer Lake, Scarlett’s house, the Dairy Maid, the Bowl-a-Rama, Miss Myrtie Mae’s house, the McKnight’s cotton gin, the Sands Drive-In Theatre, and Wylie’s Sno-Cone Stand. • For each location, draw a picture to illustrate the location and label it a letter or number. You will need to provide a LEGEND on the back with a COMPLETE SENTENCE explaining the location and its importance for the novel. • Use color to add detail and, remember, NEATNESS COUNTS!

  16. Chapter 16 (10 points) After reading Chapters 13-16, complete one of the following activities: Write a 5-7 sentence letter as Toby responding to his mother. Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph predicting what is going to happen in the next few chapters. Write a 5-7 sentence paragraph explaining what you would say to Cal after Wayne’s death.

  18. Chapter 18 (10 points) Imagine that you are Cal. Write a journal entry (5-7 sentences) expressing your thoughts and feelings on the day of Wayne’s funeral. How did you feel about the loss of your brother? How did people at the funeral behave? What is your reaction to the absence of Toby?

  19. Chapter 20 (10 points) In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, predict how you think the novel is going to end. Try to resolve all of the conflicts that have been presented.

  20. Chapter 22 (10 points) In a 5-7 sentence paragraph, explain what you think the theme of this novel is, the life message. An example would be “Honesty is the best policy”. Support your answer with evidence from the novel.

  21. You will create a Venn Diagram consisting of five similarities and difference between the book and the movie. There will a total of fifteen items listed. (15 points)

  22. Thematic Connections (30 points) In this final exercise, you will choose one of five options relating to the novel: *friendship *family *abandonment *self-discovery *bullying This will need to be two paragraphs long.
