  1. Eco Island - Sandy MileCullivoe Primary School, Shetland Please let Cullivoe Primary School start to sing to you before you click on… Breckon Sands, Cullivoe

  2. We chose the famous ‘sandy mile’ of Breckon Sands, Cullivoe, Yell, to complete this project at. This beautiful beach is only 10 min from the school. Aren’t we lucky?!!!

  3. We have been trying all week to get to Breckon Beach to clean it up… but it has never been the weather. We made it today, Friday. We have been looking forward to this all week!!

  4. When we got to the beach, we realised how lovely and clean it already was… Would we be able to complete this project here?

  5. We enjoyed a lovely walk along these gorgeous sands, gathering the rubbish that had been washed up or left. Some of us were fascinated by the shells.

  6. Isn’t this beautiful?

  7. We found all sorts of things. We spoke about what was safe to touch and what wasn’t. Luckily we didn’t find any glass.

  8. We kept gathering….

  9. We went up into the grass to see what had blown there.

  10. When we had collected all we could find, we emptied the bags to see what treasures we had found.

  11. We decided to make a birds nest with netting and seaweed and the children wanted to make a bird out of the rubbish. We set to work.

  12. Some brilliant ideas were being formed.

  13. The orange rope made great feet for our Seagull, the fish box became the body, a plank of wood and some net were the wings… Our imaginations were flowing…

  14. The bird’s nest was taking shape! Look at all the bits of net and plastic we found. We thought about what damage items like this can do to the wildlife.

  15. Our Seagull was looking good! It had even caught some food to take back to it’s nest!

  16. Everyone was proud of their achievements. We put a sun shining in the sky.

  17. We were amazed what we managed to gather from what seemed like an immaculate beach.

  18. We had lots of fun at Breckon Beach. Designing a beach ‘Art Attack’ was a great way of making the clean up fun!

  19. When we got back to school we used the opportunity to write about our trip in ‘Shetland Dialect’ Can you understand it?

If it’s Whalsay or Yell Or Fetlar’s rocky shore Or Lerwick to the bonnie Scalloway For every open door you’ll find another hundred more And a hundred welcomes waiting you and all So come with me across the sea And meet the folk of my land Where a welcome true is waiting you In a hundred Shetland Islands There’s Linga and Diya And bonnie Hascosay Oxna, Papa, Hildasay and Hoy Uynaray and Bigga Brother Isle and Ofrasey Magic names that even time cannot destroy So come with me across the sea And meet the folk of my land Where a welcome true is waiting you In a hundred Shetland Islands Far away from the bustle of the city and its crowds There’s some lovely little islands in the sea Some are large some are small There’s a hundred in all And a hundred welcomes waiting you and me So come with me across the sea And meet the folk of my land Where a welcome true is waiting you In a hundred Shetland Islands See the sunrise over Skerries Set the heather hills a glow See them lashed by the winter storm Though cold winds may blaa from Sumburgh Head to Skaw The heart of our people is warm So come with me across the sea And meet the folk of my land Where a welcome true is waiting you In a hundred Shetland Islands
