E N D
1. A: Urbanization Pros Cons Pollution (air, noise, water) Destruction of habitats Health problems Loss biodiversity • Money • Convenience
1. B: Grazing Pros Cons Deforestation Loss biodiversity Loss habitats Can’t have as many Soil degradation (desertification and erosion) • Better for meat production (NO ECOLI) • Money
1. C: Mining (surface and subsurface) Subsurface Surface Little to no health effects Cheaper/easier Destruction of habitats Erosion pollution • No destruction of habitats (except roads) • Less erosion • No dust • Health effects on humans (death?)
1. D: Forestry/logging Pros Cons Deforestation Loss habitats Loss biodiversity Soil degradation • Paper products/building supplies • Money • More land to use for buildings, and farming
1. E: Public/Federal Lands Pros Cons Invites humans in and we all know how that turns out. Like little islands of refugee surrounded by urban areas which mean they are impacted by the same pollution as the cities. • Conservation/ preservation • Protects biodiversity and habitats
2.A: Green Revolution 1 • People are hungry :malnutrition, food insecurity, food security, obesity. • Contaminated meats (ecoli), CAFO’s (concentrated animal feeding operations aka feed lots) c. Green Revolution 1: 5 steps • Mechanization • Fertilizers • Pesticides: Rachel Carson: Silent Spring- DDT (broad spectrum and narrow spectrum) • Irrigation: waterlogging and salinization • monocropping
2. B: Green Revolution 2 • GMO’s : good; less pesticides, bigger, better crops • Bad: loss of biodiversity, monocropping, pests could completely kill an entire farmers yield.
3: Sustainable practices • Intercropping, crop rotation, terracing, strip cropping. • Only using prescribed amounts of fertilizer (more does not equal bigger) • Organic farming (only natural pesticides (lady bugs) and fertilizers (manure). • IPM (Integrated Pesticide Management)- using the least harmful methods of pesticides first.
You have 15 minutes to… • Get everyone’s summary. Make sure you don’t just copy but understand what the article is about. (the main ideas of each section.
You have 5 minutes… • Develop a 30 second summary of the article and be ready to present it.
Now on your own… • Briefly define organic. Does this definition coincide with your previous definition of organic? Explain. • After reading this, do you feel like you will be more conscience as to what you eat in concerns to organic. Give two reasons for your answer.
